In this one-hour event, Dr. Mark Callanen, PT, DPT, OCS, Director of Clinical Education and Recovery Sciences for Enovis, will provide a general overview of the mechanisms of photobiomodulation and its applications for treating pain.  We will discuss recent studies that highlight how laser impacts peripheral nerves and pain associated with Osteoarthritis and review recent treatment guidelines endorsed by the APTA and AAOS (American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons).

Attendees will learn:
  • What photobiomodulation is and how it impacts cells mechanistically
  • How high power laser impacts acute pain differently than lower power devices
  • The factors and dosing considerations when addressing pain at arthritic joints

About Mark Callanen, PT, DPT, OCS

Prior to joining Chattanooga’s marketing and clinical education team, Dr. Callanen treated orthopedic patients and managed therapists in an out-patient setting for 18 years.  He has been board certified as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) by the APTA since 2003 and graduated with his transitional Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2007 from Marymount University in Arlington, VA after earning his Master of Physical Therapy from Shenandoah University in 1999.

Dr. Callanen acquired his therapeutic laser acumen after joining LightForce in early 2017 while serving as their Director of Clinical Development.  LightForce was acquired by DJO/ Chattanooga in December 2020, where he is currently serving as the Director of US Marketing and Clinical Education for the DJO Recovery Sciences Division.  He has made formal presentations to mixed professional audiences both nationally and internationally on the topic of laser therapy and has begun lecturing on the topic of shockwave therapies in 2021.  Dr. Callanen is also currently serving as an Adjunct Professor for Belmont University’s Physical Therapy Program in Nashville, TN.
